For Birth Positions I interviewed and photographed women of different ages asking them to describe their birthing experiences, the choices they were given and to re-enact the position they gave birth in. All the photographs in the series are titled with the name of the woman and the year they gave birth i.e. the year they were reliving and describing. For many women childbirth is a difficult experience, apart from the physical act itself, the feeling of loss of control over body position means that this important event becomes one associated with trauma. The medical profession largely insist women lie on their backs to give birth even if the majority of women interviewed felt this to be uncomfortable and unnatural.
